How You Can Help

Seven things you can do to protect primate populations

  • Read the label and avoid products that use palm oil that is not produced sustainably
  • Recycle your cell phone, and replace it less frequently
  • Look for "certified" sustainable wood products
  • Write to companies, producers, advertisers when you see primates being used or portrayed inappropriately
  • Educate friends, family to the issues
  • Say “no” to exotic pets
  • Support conservation organizations

PASA, an affiliation of nearly 20 sanctuaries in Africa, cares for primates rescued from the pet trade, often after being orphaned through bushmeat hunting.

Bushmeat Crisis Taskforce (www.bushmeat.org)
Bushmeat hunting in Africa has decimated many mammalian populations including apes. The Bushmeat Crisis Taskforce provides educational material and timely updates on the issue.

Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (www.rspo.org)
The removal of forests for palm oil cultivation is a critical threat to Asian apes. The Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil tracks and summarizes the efforts to develop guidelines and mandate practices for palm oil cultivation.
